The windmill is a working smock mill, its 40-foot sails still turning to drive a pump that feeds the garden's irrigation channels the same way Dutch polders were drained for centuries. Below it, forty thousand tulip bulbs are planted each fall in broad ribbons of color, peaking from mid-April through early May — after they fade, summer annuals take over the same beds through September. Climb the mill's viewing platform for the best photograph of the whole planting, and stay a moment inside to watch the gears and grindstones turn.
